I Inclined, I Squatted, I Spun!

Check out the difference! Slim head down at 31 weeks...

vs. transverse at 30! Pretty cool, no?

She SO Gets It.

I've mentioned before that Marlee definitely knows that she's going to have a baby sister. We've been reading some books on babies, and she really seems to understand what's going on. Some recent comments:

-I'm goin' hold my little tiny baby sister. But I don't pick her up.

-My toys stay in my room when baby sister comes. They're danger for babies.

-Mommy's nursies making milk for baby sister to feed her.

Best of all, she'll occasionally lift up my shirt to rub and kiss my belly and talk to baby sister. It's just about the sweetest thing ever.

Why the Belly Looks So Different

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Slim is currently hanging out in a transverse position. This also explains why I had the urge to buy a maternity support belt at a mere 28 weeks along.

I have 2 weeks to try to get her to turn at home before I get some chiropractic help. Transverse babies can only be born via Cesarean. So I have to convince her to turn...and head down, not breech. Fortunately my doula training gives me some experience in this, and my own doula is the leader in Spinning Babies knowledge for our region. Lucky me!

Think head-down thoughts!

Other than her stubborn positioning, everything looks great with Slim!

Funny Things Marlee Said Today

1. We went to the mall to ride the carousel and play on the indoor playground. She was getting tired and came over to where I was sitting, and put her head in my lap. Suddenly, she starts looking around.

MJ: Oh no! Mommy, where your purse? (this is fairly new...two weeks ago, she would have said, "Where mommy's purse?" She's getting much better at pronouns.)
Me: It's right here!
She starts digging through it.
Me: What are you looking for?
MJ: My blue shushy (pacifier).
Me: I didn't bring it.
MJ: I NEED it. I'm SO tired.

2. On our way home, we drove through Chick-Fil-A to get lunch for Michael. The guy asks if he can take our order, and Marlee yells from her seat,

I like fries, please!

I try to go on with my order, but she says repeatedly,

And fries! I like fries, PLEASE!

3. She was playing her favorite new computer game, and finds Y for yak.

Me: Yak? What's a yak?
MJ: A yak is like a cow, mommy.

Silly me.

30 Weeks!

A belly shot for Katie as promised, taken this morning, pjs and all :)

A comparison...32 weeks with Marlee June. I'm carrying so differently this time...and a bit bigger too!

Here's a picture of a baby at 30 weeks. I've been using these progress pictures to show Marlee, but I think they're fun too :)

Slim weighs about 3 pounds and is around 17 inches long.

Langdon and Violet!

Congratulations to Kacey, Chris, and big sister Pru on their new bundles of joy!

Pictures from the 4th

Better late than never, right?

Driving the boat with Papa. Marlee's a bit mad about the lifevest at this point.
Also a rare shot of the belly in all its glory.

Swimming in the lake. She loved it, even if this picture doesn't convey that!

All tuckered out.

Everyone out for an evening walk.

Weekend Away

Michael and I went to Chattanooga this weekend while Marlee spent the night at Giggy's house. It was the first time we've both been away from her overnight. I only just started to feel ready to leave her a few months ago. We decided it was time to take the plunge for a few reasons:

1. A weekend alone together would be fun!
2. We're about to have another baby, and odds are I won't want to leave that one for another 18 months. It's a window of opportunity!
3. There's a good chance I'll either go into labor in the middle of the night or have to spend a night in the hospital when Slim is born (though I'm hoping for a morning birth and going home that night). I didn't want that to be our first night away...I was worried I'd be focused on that and not the task at hand.

So we did it! Dropped Marlee off Saturday morning and drove up to Chattanooga. We spent the day Saturday walking and taking in the city. That night we did an after-hours lantern tour of Ruby Falls. It was really neat...no lights in the cave at all except our seven flashlights! I've never done the normal tour, but I'd imagine it's much less cool :). On Sunday, we slept in and had a big breakfast, then took in the Chattanooga Market. It's an awesome farmers'/artists' market held every Sunday. I really wish we had something like that here! We headed home around lunchtime to pick up MJ.

We missed her a bunch...she's usually along on all our adventures, so it felt strange. We kept thinking about how much she would enjoy certain things. We'll definitely take her soon. With all the missing though, I didn't worry about her once. I knew she was having lot of fun with Giggy. It made me feel like we did the right thing by waiting. I think if we'd have left her at a younger age, I would have worried more.

We had a great time, but we're glad to be home all together again. We love to travel, but it seems like the best part of every trip, long or short, is coming home.

Take a Collins Lake Break!

I must be in a story-sharing mood this afternoon.

I just got off the phone with Mommy (For those of you unaware of the distinction, she's the one who gave birth to me. Katie came up with the mom/mommy monikers to ease confusion when we were kids.). She told me that she, my aunt Julie, and her kids are headed out to camp at Collins Lake for the weekend. I was instantly overcome with jealousy and nostalgia. When Giselle, Frankie and I were little, our family didn't have a ton of money to take fancy vacations over the summer breaks we spent together. Every summer, we went on multiple camping trips, and our favorite destination was Collins Lake. That place had it all...tent sites that were rustic, but had running water and comfort stations just up the road to make long stays more enjoyable, a big lake for swimming and floating, even a general store with homemade ice cream. I could have lived there. My mom had camping down to an art. She had a computer-printed checklist of all our supplies and pre-packed bins that held essentials (tents, cookware, first aid, etc) and fun stuff (pool floats and Yahtzee). When we got home from a trip, everything was washed, counted, and repacked so that we were ready to go again.

We did the whole shebang...yummy camp dinners, s'mores, and campfire songs. Nature hikes, fishing, and swimming. We always made friends with the people at neighboring camps and often shared meals and campfire time with former strangers. When I think of adolescent summers, I think of Collins Lake. I would give anything to be going on that trip this weekend!

Croup

I've been putting off posting until I have pictures from our holiday weekend, but those will have to wait. I felt like it was time for a post :)

Marlee has been sick this week. We noticed she was a bit feverish at the cabin on Sunday, but she was happy as a clam, so we figured it was just the four new teeth she's (finally!) getting. In the middle of the night Sunday, she developed a barking cough and a higher fever, so Monday morning meant a trip to the pediatrician.

I was pretty sure it was croup...I've had a good bit of experience with it. Not only did it pop up all the time when I worked at the preschool, I also got a taste of it many years ago. When I was 13sih I was babysitting Alexander and Jenna...I think Jenna was about a year old. Out of nowhere, Jenna started coughing, and it didn't take a doctor to know that it was NOT a normal cough. She was having trouble breathing. I called a family member who was a doctor, and he advised me to sit in the bathroom with her and let the hot shower run. I did, and in the meantime called the restaurant where our parents were eating (ah, the days before cell phones). As we sat in the bathroom, Jenna would occasionally stop coughing...not because she was feeling better but because she wasn't breathing. She turned blue twice, and I called 911. The paramedics beat my parents home and had an oxygen tube in Jenna's nose before I could blink. It was the scariest moment in my life, and I know you don't mess with croup.

Fortunately, Marlee's never got that bad. Steroids helped open her airways, and four days later, she's a bit perkier, and although she still has a nagging cough, it's not the stridor-sounding bark of croup.

On a fun note, we've been spending lots of extra time at home. Croup is very contagious, and steroids can weaken the immune system, so we didn't leave the house until today. Because Marlee can now identify her alphabet letters, we spent our extra free time working on the sounds they make. She can tell you the sounds of about ten of them! The kid constantly amazes me.

Daddy's Beard

Because Michael works from home, he's usually sporting a stubbly beard. Marlee likes to rub it. He shaved recently and she asked, "Where daddy's beard go?" He explained that he shaved it off, but that it would grow back. A few days later, she announced, "Daddy! Your beard came back soon!"
